Nearly-thirteen-year-old Evie Von Rathe lives in Blight Harbor (the seventh-most haunted town in America per capita) with her Aunt Desdemona, the local paranormal expert. Des doesn’t have many rules except one absolute, iron-clad one: Stay out of the abandoned abattoir at the edge of town. Evie obeys—until she doesn’t, following her aunt to the slaughterhouse one bright June day.
When her aunt disappears into the abattoir, Evie goes searching for her. There she meets The Clackity, a creature who lives in the shadows and seams of the slaughterhouse. The Clackity makes a deal with Evie to help get Desdemona back in exchange for the ghost of John Jeffrey Pope, a serial killer who stalked Blight Harbor a hundred years earlier, who has unspeakable ties to the abattoir, and who is holding Des captive.
To find them both, Evie crosses through the abattoir’s supernatural gateway to a strange neighborhood of seven houses, aided only by a living, moving creature she calls Bird who tattooed itself into her skin. She must make her way through the houses, one by one, playing a game set in motion by The Clackity, until she reaches the seventh house and her aunt. The task sounds simple, except these aren’t regular houses. There are hungry witches, penny-eyed ghosts and a memory-thief to deal with—and she’s being pursued by a dead man whose only goal is to add Evie to his collection of lost and bound souls. None of it is going to be easy, especially with Evie’s panic attacks, but the strange neighborhood plays by its own set of rules, and some of them might just be in Evie’s favor.

Lora Senf is a writer of dark and twisty middle grade and young adult stories. She credits her love of words to her parents and to the public library that was walking distance from her childhood home. Lora finds inspiration for her writing in her children’s retellings of their dreams, on road trips through Montana, and most recently in an abandoned abattoir. She is a member of SCBWI, Horror Writers Association, and the Pacific Northwest Writers Association. She lives in Washington State with her husband, their twins, and two remarkably lazy cats. The Clackity is her first novel.
